Louisiana becomes first US state to allow castration of child sex offenders

The State of Louisiana is very close to passing a bill that allows for the surgical castration of child sex offenders. Congress approved the bill and now the governor's ratification remains, in order for it to become law. The bill, passed by a wide majority on Monday, allows judges to order the surgical castration of defendants convicted of certain serious crimes, such as raping minors under 13. Louisiana was among the first states along with California and Texas to legalize chemical castration for such offenses and now becomes the first to mandate surgical castration, that is, in addition to substances that simply inhibit organ function.
