Lollapalooza 2025: Alanis Morissette’s classic album turns 30

The singer Alanis Morissette celebrates the 30th anniversary of its most important album in 2025 on the same date on which it is presented in the Lollapalooza Brasil . “Jagged Little Pill” was the album that made the Canadian artist famous and also offered new paths to pop-rock in the 1990s.

In 1995, Morissette was 21 when she decided to take a new course for her career. After two dancing albums, she decided to address a sound closer to rock in her new studio work.

Thus was born “Jagged Little Pill”, an album that would be marked by its lyrics about anger and substance abuse and a sound that made Grunge elements, falling popularity after the death of Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, more palatable to radio.

With hits such as “Ironic” and “Hand In My Pocket” and “All I Really Want”, Alanis achieved success and recognition of criticism. Taking advantage of the singer’s coming to Brazil to Lollapalooza, we recall some facts and curiosities about “Jagged Little Pill” below.

“Jagged Little Pill” was nominated for nine Grammys and won five gold gramophones, including album of the year. At the time, Alanis became the youngest artist to win the most important award statuette, being surpassed only by Taylor Swift in 2010.

One of the best selling records in history

Jagged Little Pill has sold over 35 million copies around the world. According to Rolling Stone magazine, the album is the fifth best selling in history.

“You Outta Know”, one of the most famous tracks of “Jagged Little Pill,” featured a respectful “kitchen”. The song has Flea, from Red Hot Chili Peppers, in Baixo and Dave Navarro, former Jane’s Addiction on the guitar.

Alanis album was refused by record labels

In an interview with Jimmy Fallon’s show Alanis Morissette said the first version of “Jagged Little Pill” with only 10 songs was rejected by at least 10 record labels. She then decided to work more on the project, composed three more songs and got it from Maverick, a seal founded by Madonna.

Broadway musical

“Jagged Little Pill” also became a successful Broadway musical. Launched in 2018, the adaptation of Alanis Morissette’s classic album was a big audience success and was nominated for 15 Tony Awards.
