Logitech, together with Tencent, is creating a direct competitor to Steam Deck, but there is a nuance

The market for portable game consoles has died down for a reason – the format of a compact, but extremely weak set-top box itself has become obsolete, giving way to mobile gaming and full-fledged stationary systems. But more recently, the Nintendo Switch proved that gamers are ready to buy portable consoles to run modern and not so video games, since there is nothing corny to play on smartphones. And this year, Valve literally conquered the market with its compact Steam Deck computer, which was loved long before the release. And, apparently, Logitech also decided to try to win back a piece from the huge pie of gamers around the world – the company is also working on a portable gaming PC.

It is worth noting that this is done by a subsidiary of Logitech G, which is fully focused on the gaming segment. Most often, this company launches various gaming peripherals for PCs and consoles, but now Logitech G has signed a partnership agreement with Chinese entertainment giant Tencent Games, together the two teams should create a next-generation portable device by the end of this year. However, you need to understand that “create” does not mean “release”. At best, a portable gaming PC is just announced before the end of the year, but there really is too little time left.

In addition, the main feature of the new portable PC, which distinguishes it from the background of Steam Deck and potential numerous competitors from China, is that we are talking about a device with an emphasis on cloud computing. The companies do not plan to create a productive device that could independently run modern video games and show a nice picture – instead, they are in talks with the teams developing Xbox Cloud Gaming and NVIDIA GeForce Now. Accordingly, in the end, one (or both at once, but this is unlikely) of the services will work on the console right out of the box, allowing you to run AAA projects without powerful hardware under the hood.

The company, during the announcement of a partnership agreement with the Chinese giant, did not even mention the possibility of launching video games not from the cloud. From this we can conclude that the console is equipped with a powerful modem for connecting to a cellular network or Wi-Fi, plus it is equipped with the necessary hardware for streaming content. And in fact, this format of consumption has a chance to live, since the gamer will not have to worry about the characteristics and upgrades of the PC in the future.
