Local candidate is shot dead hours before voting in Mexico's elections

A candidate was shot dead in western Mexico on Saturday night (June 1), hours before the start of the country's general elections.

Israel Delgado Vega, 35, a local candidate from the city of Cuitzeo, in the state of Michoacán, western Mexico, was outside his home when he was surprised by two people on a motorcycle, who fired shots at him, according to the police.

This Mexican election became the bloodiest in the country's modern history. In total, 38 candidates were murdered before voting this Sunday (2).

Violence has become one of the main themes of this year's presidential campaign.

The issue of violent crime has emerged as a major one in this year's presidential race. The favorite candidate, Claudia Sheinbaum, 61, from the Morena party, the same as President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, had to answer tough questions during the campaign about the country's high homicide rate.

The opposition used the numbers to defend a change.
