Lithuania: Accuses Belarus of facilitating the passage of irregular migrants

Members of the Belarusian security forces allegedly helped a group of migrants illegally cross into Lithuaniaaccording to the complaint of the border guard of the Baltic state.

A video posted on the social networking site Facebook shows what it says are armed Belarusians escorting migrants to the fence built by Lithuanian authorities last year when dozens of people were trying to enter European Union states from Belarus.

According to the Lithuanian border guard, Belarusian police damaged the fence for migrants to pass by cutting barbed wire and breaking in door.

The group of migrants was arrested by the Lithuanian border guard shortly after crossing, while the Belarusian police officers were hiding behind vegetation in the area before leaving by car, always according to the authorities in Vilnius.

The case is being investigated.

The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry already delivered a protest note to the government in Minsk in September over repeated cases of “intentional damage” to the fence, which was completed in August 2021.

Lithuania shares a border of almost 680 kilometers with Belarus. Its borders are also external borders of the EU.

Reacting to the 2020 crisis, Vilnius has stepped up its border guarding and built a 550-kilometer, 4-meter-high fence topped with barbed wire.

The EU has repeatedly accused Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of transporting migrants from conflict-ridden areas of his country and then sending them to its external borders in retaliation and to pressure Brussels after European sanctions were imposed on his government. .
