Lira authorizes police escort for deputy who reported threats

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), authorized a Legislative Police escort for federal deputy Amom Mandel (Cidadania-AM).

The seal was published on Friday night (19) and authorizes police protection within the Federal District for a period of 30 days from January 19.

The document to which the CNN had access was sent to the Legislative Police Department (Depol) so that the parliamentarian's personal guard can be implemented.

Amom Mandel has been using social media since the beginning of the year to report that he has received threats and attempts at coercion.

In one of the publications, the deputy appears in a video stating that the attempts to intimidate him began after he reported to the Federal Police the alleged involvement of members of the highest level of Public Security in Amazonas with criminal organizations in the region.

The parliamentarian also denounced that he and his partner were victims of a brutal and non-standard police approach in Manaus (AM). For Mandel, this action is linked to attempts at coercion.

“If anyone in this state thinks that putting a gun to my head or pointed at my partner will intimidate me and make me retreat, they are very mistaken,” declared Mandel in a video published on X (formerly Twitter).

Federal police

Last week, Lira also sent the Federal Police a request to escort the deputy when he is in Amazonas on commitments as a parliamentarian – since the legislative police will only provide protection to Mandel in the Federal District region.

In a letter sent to the Regional Superintendence of the PF of Amazonas, the president of the Chamber points out that the parliamentarian from Amazonas has frequently been the target of illegal threats and constraints, which would be damaging the constitutional prerogatives of his position.

“I request the deployment of a police officer from the ranks of the Federal Police to provide a personal escort for federal deputy Amom Mandel on his commitments in this state (Amazonas)”, Lira detailed in the document.

Lira also asked that the federal police take “all essential measures to ensure the safety of the congressman in question, respecting the territorial limits of the Amazon region”.

According to an investigation by the CNN , there is an expectation that at least two federal police officers from Amazonas will also be assigned to the deputy's personal protection when he is in the state. The report found that the PF's escort request is still under analysis.

Regarding the complaints made by Amom Madel, the PF informed that the investigation is ongoing, but under secrecy to “preserve the investigative success”.

When contacted, the governor of Amazonas, Wilson Lima (União Brasil), told the analyst from CNN Larissa Rodrigues that the Amazonas Public Security Secretariat (SSP) did not receive any type of notification or request for explanation from the PF, but is available to clarify anything necessary.

The governor also denied that the police approach suffered by the deputy in Manaus had any intimidating nature.

“The SSP emphasizes that the approach carried out is a standard procedure applied to any citizen and that at all times of the incident the deputy was treated cordially, being advised on the measures that could be adopted at that moment”, states the note sent by the governor.
