The Oscar nominees were announced this Tuesday (23). In the Best Actress category, Lily Gladstone was nominated – the first Native American actress to compete for the award.
Gladstone plays Mollie Burkhart in the film “Flower Moon Assassins“, new feature film by Martin Scorsese. She is competing against Annette Bening (for “Nyad”), Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Creatures”).
According to the actress's interview with The Guardian, she lived on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, in the state of Montana, in the United States, until she was 11 years old. The reserve encompasses the Kainai, Amskapi Piikani and Nimi'ipuu First Nations.
This year, Gladstone made history by being the first indigenous woman to win a Golden Globe. She received the statuette for Best Actress in a Drama, beating out names like Annette Bening (for “Nyad”), Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Greta Lee (“Past Lives”), Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”) and Cailee Spaeny (“Priscilla”).
Despite being the first Native American actress to compete in the Best Actress category, other indigenous actresses have already won recognition from the Film Academy by being nominated in the same category.
Keisha Castle-Hughes, born in Australia, was nominated for “Whale Rider”, in 2002. Yalitza Aparicio, an indigenous Mexican actress, received the nomination for Best Actress for “Roma”, in 2019. The first indigenous actress to receive a nomination was Merle Oberon, Anglo-Indian, for her performance in “Dark Angel”, 1935.
