Society in Serbia is shocked by the carnage caused yesterday, Wednesday, by a 14-year-old student at a Belgrade Primary school, where he killed eight of his classmates and the school guard. Students from other schools in Belgrade come in an organized manner early this morning and lay flowers or light a candle in front of the school entrance in memory of the innocent victims. It was a touching moment when the classmates of the children who were killed, from the 7th grade, came together with the teachers. They observed a minute’s silence, laid flowers, lit candles, hugged and cried.
In the emergency clinic in Belgrade three students with serious injuries and the history teacher who was also injured are hospitalized in the intensive care unit. As announced, their condition is stable but critical.
The young perpetrator was taken to a psychiatric clinic, while, as reported by the general prosecutor’s office, no criminal charges will be brought against him since he has not reached the age of 14. Criminal proceedings were brought against his father, who was remanded in custody.
In Serbia no one can believe what happened. No one can understand how a 13-year-old planned the attack on his school in chilling detail.
“On the blueprint of the school, which we found in his apartment, he detailed which course he would follow, which rooms he would enter and which students he would kill. It looked like he was going through levels in a video game”his police commander said at a press conference Belgrade Veselin Milic. He also revealed that the assailant during interrogation stated that he often went with his father to a shooting range where he would shoot with the pistol he used in the school attack.

Although the motives of the attack remain unknown, the fact is, according to official data, that the attacker recently changed department at his own request, but was unable to adapt to the new environment and had not formed friendly relations with his classmates. The Serbian president also revealed in a press conference that although he is an excellent student, he was constantly pressured by his parents about his grades.

Serbian public opinion demands that the government and authorities take measures to prevent such tragic events from happening again and to protect children in schools. It is also requested that measures be taken against the carrying of weapons. In Serbia of seven million people, 750,000 firearms licenses are currently in force, but it is estimated that 30% of the population has a firearm at home, legally or illegally.
