Libya: Nine dead and 16 injured from armed clashes near Tripoli

At least nine people were killed and 16 wounded during clashes that broke out on Friday between gunmen in the Libyan capital’s Tazoura suburb. A resident of the area told the Reuters news agency that he heard a barrage of gunfire shortly before Friday prayers, adding that he had locked himself in his home for security reasons. He said that the clashes continued for about two hours, before calm was restored in the area. Tazoura is a coastal area, about 25 kilometers east of Tripoli. Libya remains mired in chaos after the 2011 uprising that toppled the regime of Colonel Gaddafi. It remains divided, with two governments vying for power: the UN-recognized government of national unity in Tripoli and the one in the eastern part of the country, which is backed by Marshal Haftar.
