Libya: At least 55 dead from armed clashes in Tripoli

At least 55 people were killed and another 146 injured during the of bloody riots that broke out in the previous days in Tripoliaccording to a representative of the center of immediate medical assistance in its capital Libya.

Clashes between armed groups, the worst in years in Tripoli, began to ease on Thursday after the release of the commander of the so-called Brigade 444, whose capture had sparked the unrest.

The so-called Special Deterrence Force agreed to release 444 Brigade commander Mahmud Hamza, whom he was holding captive. Hamza was handed over to a third armed group, the Stabilization Support Mechanism, after the security forces maintained a stance of neutrality under the ceasefire agreement.

Libya has been in chaos since 2011, when a NATO-backed uprising toppled the regime of Colonel Gaddafi. In the oil-rich country, two rival governments have been fighting for power ever since: one in the west and the other in the east.

Last summer, clashes between the Special Deterrence Force and other armed groups killed at least 50 people in the Libyan capital.
