Liam Payne: see everything that is known about the singer’s death

Former member of the band One Direction, Liam Payne, died aged 31 after falling from the third floor of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, according to police. The exact circumstances surrounding his death are still unclear.

Here’s what we know about the case so far:

Emergency call

Hotel staff requested urgent police assistance shortly before Payne fell, according to an emergency call obtained by the local affiliate of CNN All News.

“We have a guest who is overloaded with drugs and alcohol,” the hotel manager said on the call. “He breaks things. He’s destroying the entire room.”

The manager said they needed “someone sent to us urgently” as the staff didn’t know “if the guest’s life was at risk”.

Hotel staff had been unable to enter the room where this guest was staying “for two or three days,” the manager said on the call.

Police rush to the hotel

Pablo Policicchio, director of communications for the Buenos Aires Ministry of Security, said in a statement to the Associated Press that Payne “jumped from the balcony of his room.”

Police rushed to the hotel in response to an emergency call just after 5 p.m. local time, he said, warning of an “aggressive man who may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”

Photos of Payne’s hotel room, released by Buenos Aires police, show a broken television.

Authorities are still investigating the circumstances of his death.

Cause of death

The official cause of Payne’s death was “polytrauma” with “internal and external hemorrhage”, according to the preliminary autopsy report carried out this Wednesday (16), by the Argentine forensic body investigating the case.

THE CNN obtained access to the document through the Buenos Aires city police. The toxicology report is still pending.

Publications on the day of death

The singer made a series of posts on Snapchat less than an hour before his death. Among the artist’s posts, he showed details of his morning, talked about his plans for the day and posed next to his girlfriend, model Katie Cassidy.

Some rumors on the internet suggested that the records published by Payne would not have been recorded on Wednesday, the day of his death.

Cassidy confirmed that he was no longer in Buenos Aires at the time of the posts. In a video on her TikTok profile, she showed her trip back to Florida, in the USA, at the beginning of the week.

Mental health issues

In recent years, Payne has spoken publicly about the battles he has faced with his mental health and substance abuse.

He reflected on his recurring feelings of loneliness on the 2019 Sky show “Ant Middleton & Liam Payne: Straight Talking”, saying: “There are times when that level of loneliness and people get to you every day… every now and then, You think, when will this end?”

“It almost killed me a few times,” he added.

Payne also spoke in 2021 on the podcast “The Diary of a CEO” about dealing with alcoholism. “It was a problem” and had “very, very serious” aspects, he said.

“It seems to me that when we were in the band, the best way to protect ourselves, after something so big had become, was to simply lock ourselves in our rooms. And, of course, what’s in the room? Minibar. So at a certain point I thought, well, I’m going to throw a party for one — and that seemed to continue for many years of my life,” he added.

“It’s wild, but it was the only way I could vent my frustration during the day,” he said.

Journey to stardom

Payne was born on August 29, 1993, in the English city of Wolverhampton and studied music technology at the City of Wolverhampton College.

He was still living in the area when he gained fame on the British TV show “The X Factor.” He first appeared on the show in 2008, aged 14, returning for a second audition two years later on the advice of Simon Cowell.

He won the hearts of young fans along with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson after they all came together on the show to form One Direction.

By amassing a global fan base of “Directioners,” the beloved boy band became the first to have their first four albums debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Also nicknamed 1D, the group has sold more than 70 million records worldwide. the world before splitting up in 2016.

The band was known for songs like “What Makes You Beautiful”, “Best Song Ever”, “Story of My Life”, “Steal My Girl” and “Night Changes”.

Payne’s solo songs include “Strip That Down (feat. Quavo),” which reached No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, “Familiar,” and “Bedroom Floor.” Earlier this year, he released the song “Teardrops.”
