Level of Rio Negro falls 3 meters in September and approaches historic low

The Rio Negro has already dropped three meters in September alone and is approaching its historic low, reached in October 2023. The river level began to fall on July 5. That’s 71 consecutive days of falling river levels.

According to measurement data at the port of Manaus, the river level is at 16.75 this Friday (13). The river started the month at 19.78, meaning an average drop of 25 centimeters per day.

The lowest level ever recorded was on October 26, 2023, when it reached 12.70 meters in the lowest low tide in the history of the Rio Negro.

Emergency decree

The Manaus City Hall declared a state of emergency for 180 days due to the drought affecting the state of Amazonas and the capital.

The measure seeks to address the impacts of the severe drought, which is already affecting the population and putting riverside communities at risk.

In addition to allowing emergency actions, the decree authorizes the mobilization of resources and partnerships to minimize the social, economic and environmental effects caused by the prolonged drought.
