Legal Amazon concentrates deaths due to conflicts in the Brazilian countryside

Of the 14 murders due to conflict in the countryside registered in the first half of 2023, the majority (11) occurred in the Legal Amazon. The information comes from a survey carried out by the Pastoral Land Commission (CPT), which released partial data on conflicts in the countryside in the first half of this year.

Despite being alarming for the Legal Amazon region, the figure is 51.72% lower than the 29 recorded in the same period in 2022. However, by October of this year, the number rose to 18.

According to the study, the majority of these cases were related to pesticide contamination. Of these deaths, 6 – that is, the majority – were indigenous people.

In the general picture, indigenous peoples were those who suffered the most violence. According to the Pastoral Land Commission, around 38.2% of cases were concentrated among original peoples.

According to the survey, 973 conflicts were recorded, showing an increase of 8% compared to the same period in 2022. Last year, the total recorded was 900 incidents.

According to the CPT, this data makes the first half of 2023 the second worst in the last ten years. The “worst year” recorded was 2020, with 1,007 conflicts.

In 2023, the highest number of incidents was conflicts over land: 791. Next are records of rural slave labor, with 102, and conflicts over water, with 80. According to the survey, around 527 thousand people were involved between conflicts in the countryside.

Another fact is that there was a significant increase in the number of victims due to conflicts in the countryside, jumping from 418 in 2022 to 779 in 2023. The greatest violence is due to contamination by pesticides, affecting 327 people; as well as mineral contamination, which affected 55 people.

The study also highlights the increase in violence against women, citing the case of 30 Yanomami teenagers who were raped by miners who invaded indigenous land in Roraima. In addition, 20 cases of intimidation of women, 16 death threats, 6 assaults and 5 cases of false imprisonment were also recorded.
