The Lavagem do Bonfim procession will be held again in Salvador this Thursday (12), after two years with the party canceled due to Covid-19.
The faithful walk eight kilometers between the basilicas of Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Praia, in Comércio, and Nosso Senhor do Bonfim, in Colina Sagrada, where the traditional washing of the stairs takes place.
The party is a way of reaffirming the faith, through requests and thanksgiving, to salute Our Lord of Bonfim. The two hymns composed in honor of the saint, including, complete 100 years in 2023.
In addition to the baianas, more than 40 cultural groups participate in the route, among them several Afro blocks, which perform for the public during the procession.
The washing of the stairs is the second largest popular demonstration in Bahia, after Carnival.
The celebration ends with the mass to Senhor do Bonfim on the 15th, the first Sunday after the washing, which is always done on the second Thursday of the year.
