The Latvia Parliament today turned the green light to withdraw the country from the Otava Convention on the banning of mines against staff, citing the need to reinforce its security in the light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, in February 2022, Russia’s neighbors have been worried that they may be on the target of Moscow. “The departure from the Otava Convention will give our armed forces to maneuver in the event of a military threat and allow them to use all the available means to defend our citizens,” said Inara Murnice, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee.
