Larissa Manoela says she has polycystic ovary syndrome and endometriosis; understand

Actress Larissa Manoela, 21, revealed on Tuesday (20) that she was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome, also known by the acronym PCOS, a condition that causes the imbalance of certain hormones.

The actress also claimed to have endometriosis but who recently got scared with the positive diagnosis for PCOS.

“Yesterday [19] through a detailed ultrasound I discovered that in addition to endometriosis I also have polycystic ovary. It’s not easy being a woman. The positive diagnosis frightens and I confess to destabilize. But I’m sure I’ll find the best treatment for both diseases!” wrote the actress.

The disease has been highlighted as one of the most common endocrine disorders in reproductive age, and its prevalence in women varies from 6% to 10%, according to Publication of the Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics Associations (Febrasgo).

THE CNN the gynecologist and obstetrician Juliana Stivaletti reiterates that PCOS is characterized as a set of signs and symptoms that affect women mainly of reproductive age, and cause an increase in ovarian volume with a pattern of cysts in the periphery.

main symptoms

Among the main symptoms that can occur in women with polycystic ovary syndrome, menstrual irregularity, hair growth, weight gain, skin blemishes and difficulty getting pregnant are highlighted.

However, even without evidence of these symptoms, it is important to make regular visits to the gynecologist for routine exams, which are capable of detecting this and other diseases.

“When checking the symptoms, it is necessary to look for the gynecologist for a clinical, laboratory and ultrasound evaluation”, explained the doctor Juliana Stivaletti.

She adds that the correct diagnosis for polycystic ovary syndrome can be detected by ultrasound, blood test and clinical diagnosis.

PCOS in teenagers

The prevalence of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in adolescence is not well established, because the symptoms and signs that define the syndrome often overlap with the physiological changes in the reproductive axis that usually occur during this period, as explained by Febrasgo.

The federation emphasizes that, for adolescents, the exam criteria are stricter, and follow-up is recommended years after the first menstruation.

“Even if you meet these criteria, the diagnosis made in adolescence should be reviewed eight years after menarche.”

Treatment

The gynecologist explains that the treatment encompasses several aspects, which include changes in routine and adaptation to a healthier life.

“With changes in habits such as diet correction, physical activity, in addition to specific medications focused on the treatment of insulin resistance and even hormonal treatment in individual cases”, Stivaletti said.

With this, each patient corresponds in a way, and medical follow-up is recommended to define the best treatment for your case.

“The treatment is based on lifestyle changes (weight loss) and the use of combined oral contraceptives associated or not with the use of metformin”, highlights Febrasgo.

What is the best way to live with the disease?

The doctor explains that Polycystic Ovary Syndrome has to be seen as a consequence and not a cause, with this, attitudes in our routine can impact the treatment of the disease.

“Therefore, a diet low in sugars, white flour, processed, industrialized foods and the inclusion of physical activity are already an excellent beginning of treatment and improves the ovarian pattern and quality of life”, said the gynecologist.

PCOS and the impact on fertility

PCOS can cause anovulation, that is, menstrual cycles without ovulation, which makes spontaneous pregnancy difficult, explains the doctor to CNN .

“The correction of these environmental factors, together with the appropriate treatment, will help to improve the quality of the ovarian pattern and, consequently, fertility”, concludes Juliana Stivaletti.

endometriosis

This July of this year, the singer anita also used social networks to draw attention to a disease that affects more than 7 million women in Brazil: endometriosis.

In a post on Twitter, the singer revealed that she was diagnosed with endometriosis after a series of tests.

“Research, guys. Endometriosis is very common among women. It has several side effects, in each body in a way. They can extend to the bladder and cause excruciating pain when urinating. There are several treatments. Mine will have to be surgery”, said Anitta.

Pain, which compromises a woman’s quality of life, is one of the most common symptoms of endometriosis. In addition, difficulty getting pregnant can also happen in people with the disease.
