In the early hours of Thursday (13), a sculpture made by pineapples gave way during a public event that took place in Pombos, Pernambuco.
The city is known for the production of pineapples and annually holds the festival with a large sculpture of the fruit. “This is a traditional festival. The city is known for its production of pineapples, which have quality and are sweet,” said Marimuth Coelho, a civil police officer residing in Pombos.
In a video recorded at the time of the accident, people can be seen removing the pineapples from the structure as it falls towards the person who is filming.
Although the fall occurred with several civilians around, Marimuth, who recorded the video, reported that it was just a scare, with no injuries.
At the end of the event, pineapples are traditionally distributed, which did not happen in this year’s edition. “Unfortunately, people did not wait for city officials to come to distribute the pineapples. As a result, the structure itself lost stability and collapsed”, explained the policewoman.
The incident took place around 1:30 am on Thursday and, according to Marimuth, the structure had around 2400 pineapples. In previous editions, there were no problems with the structure of the sculpture.
THE CNN sought out the Pombos City Hall, but had no response.
