Landslide near Machu Picchu leaves two missing and 12 injured

A landslide seven kilometers from Machu Picchu, in Peru, left two missing and 12 injured on Sunday afternoon (25), as reported this Monday (26) by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism through its account on X , formerly Twitter.

The 14 victims were traveling along the road known as Rota Amazônica, the ministry said. After the incident, the injured were taken to medical care and the route was temporarily closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

The landslide occurred due to heavy rain that fell in the region. However, according to the ministry, the Machu Picchu archaeological center is operating “normally”, along with the trains that run along the Cusco-Ollantaytambo-Machupicchu Pueblo section.

Machu Picchu is one of Peru's main tourist destinations. According to the Government, even before the Covid-19 pandemic, almost 6 thousand tourists arrived at the site every day.

The number was reduced to just over 2,000 during the health contingency and, after that period, the authorities sought to increase the presence of visitors again and exceed 4,000 daily.
