A landslide caused by heavy rains that hit Manaus this weekend left at least eight dead in the Amazonian capital.
“By close to 2 am this Monday, eight bodies had already been found, four children and four adults, with four of these victims belonging to the same family. One person was rescued alive, but could not resist the injuries”, informed the City Hall of Manaus in a note.
The landslide, in which about 11 houses were affected according to the city hall, happened in the Jorge Teixeira neighborhood, in the east zone of Manaus. The average was 96 mm of rain in the place.
City Hall activated a Crisis Management Committee to deal with the situation.
Mayor David Almeida (Avante) accompanied the operations at the site and informed that he scheduled for this Tuesday (14) an audience with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) “to seek more resources and thus intensify the work of the city hall to alleviate the historical problem of the city with areas of risk and sanitation”.
