It is clear that its overall benefits AstraZeneca vaccine in preventing COVID-19 outweigh the risks of very rare and unusual side effects, says EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakidou following the new announcements of the European Medicines Agency.
“The AstraZeneca vaccine is an important part of our vaccine portfolio – it is an effective vaccine that protects against serious illness and death, in the EU and worldwide,” said Kyriakidou.
He noted that he had informed all EU Health Ministers of the intermediate outcome of this assessment and of the maximum possible coordination of EU Member States’ science-based approaches, taking into account the different national situations.
At the same time, the Commissioner stressed that “the start of vaccinations across the EU is increasing day by day. “Over the past week, we have seen an average of 2.5 million vaccinations a day across the EU.”
To date, 24.5% of the EU adult population has been vaccinated with a single dose and 9.1% fully vaccinated, said Kyriakidou.
“The basis for successful vaccination campaigns is the trust of the people. “Trust requires science, clarity and coherence – let us ensure that we provide it to our citizens,” the European Commissioner concluded.
