In conjunction with the Association of Relatives of Victims and Survivors of the Tragedy of Santa Maria (AVTSM), the city of Santa Maria (RS) published the bidding notice for the construction of a memorial in honor of the victims of the Kiss nightclub fire. The tragedy killed 242 people in January 2013.

Construction is budgeted at around R$5.5 million, with R$3.8 million for the purchase of materials and the remainder for labor.
The architectural project will be paid for by the Fund for the Reconstitution of Damaged Assets of the Public Ministry of Rio Grande do Sul, which transferred around R$4 million in May. The style was chosen through an open national architecture competition, organized by the Brazilian Institute of Architects in 2018.
The new space should have a total constructed area of 383.65 square meters and will include: office, multipurpose room, auditorium, bathrooms, storage, technical area and balcony. The proposal also envisages a naturalistic circular flower garden. Around there will be 242 wooden pillars, each representing a victim of the fire.
The construction of a memorial has been on the agenda since 2013, as, to date, Santa Maria does not have any specific location relating to the tragedy. Not even the tent with photos of the victims that was located in the city’s central square survived the ten years of legal uncertainty in the case.
The structure will be built on the same land where the nightclub operated, on Avenida dos Andradas, in the central region of Santa Maria.
The notice is available on the city hall website. The opening of envelopes with proposals from interested companies will take place on January 5, 2024.
