On November 14, 1948, Queen Elizabeth gave birth to her first child, Charles. 74 years later Charles is now Britain’s monarch and today he celebrates his birthday, his first on the throne, which he apparently intends to spend quietly with his wife, Camilla.
It is still too early in his reign to make any announcement about whether the king will follow royal tradition, which calls for separate official birthdays in the summer.
The Royal Equestrian Band will perform ‘Happy Birthday’ during the changing of the guard ceremony at his palace Buckingham. For the first time, cannon fire will be fired across the capital followed by a 41-gun salute from the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery in London’s Green Park. Immediately afterwards the Band of the Scots Guards will play Happy Birthday in the park.
Prince William and his family were among the first to wish the king a happy birthday with a photo shared on their official Twitter account, writing: “We wish Her Majesty a very happy birthday.”
