King Charles III engraves Christmas message in former hospital chapel

King Charles III will give his traditional Christmas message in a chapel in a former hospital, Buckingham Palace said on Monday, an action that will break with tradition and be a nod to the British monarch’s cancer treatment.

In February, the palace revealed that Charles, 76, who became king in 2022, had been diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer, detected in tests following a corrective procedure for an enlarged prostate.

Last week, a palace source reported that the treatment was progressing well and would continue next year.

For his annual broadcast of the recorded Christmas Day message, Charles chose Fitzrovia Chapel, an ornate former church on the site of a former hospital in central London. The video will be broadcast on Wednesday (25).

“It is now a space for quiet reflection, discovery and celebration, connecting diverse communities of all faiths and none,” said Buckingham Palace in the X, adding that the king’s grandfather, George VI, laid the foundation stone for the building in 1928 .

Christmas message from King Charles III is confidential

The content of the message itself remains confidential until it is broadcast, but a royal source said it will reflect on international, national and personal challenges and how they can be overcome by communities supporting each other.

The seasonal messages date back to a radio speech given by great-grandfather George V in 1932, and are usually filmed in one of the monarch’s homes, with the last time Queen Elizabeth recorded outside a royal residence in 2006.

Last year, Charles delivered his message from Buckingham Palace.

The Daily Telegraph, which had previously become aware of the site, reported that Charles himself had chosen the chapel while facing his own health problems.

A source told the newspaper that the monarch wanted his message to appear more modern.
