King Charles claims to be “deeply sad” with Pope Francis’ death

King Charles III of the United Kingdom said he was “deeply sad” with the death of Pope Francis, sending his “most sincere condolences and deep sympathy to the church that he served with such determination.”

Charles, the head of the Anglican Church, who separated from Rome in 1534, and his wife, Queen Camila, met Pope Francis at the Vatican earlier this month.

The Pope met with the royal couple privately and wished the best for the 20th wedding anniversary, which they celebrated on Wednesday, said a statement from the Vatican.

Buckingham Palace said Charles and Camilla “were delighted that the Pope was well enough to receive them-and had the opportunity to share his best desires personally.”

Francisco and Charles met twice before Charles of becoming king in 2017 and 2019.

The late Queen Elizabeth II visited Francis in the Vatican in 2014.
