Kamala Harris has 43% of voting intentions; Trump, 42%, says Reuters/Ipsos

Kamala Harris has the support of 43% of registered voters, compared with 42% for Donald Trump, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll. The result is within the margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.

The poll was conducted over three days and ended on Sunday. A Reuters/Ipsos poll last week showed Harris at 44% and Trump at 42%.

Kamala has cemented her position as the Democratic candidate in the past 10 days after Joe Biden, 81, dropped out of the presidential race. Since then, she has received a flood of donations and support.

Overall, voters have become more favorable towards Kamala over the past month.

According to the poll, 46% of voters have a favorable opinion of her, compared with 51% who have an unfavorable view. That compares with 40% favorable and 57% unfavorable in a Reuters/Ipsos poll completed on July 2.

That same Trump statistic has changed little over that period, with 41% of registered voters having a favorable opinion of him and 56% having an unfavorable view in the most recent poll.

The poll showed that registered voters prefer Trump’s approach to the economy, immigration and crime and think Kamala has a better plan for health care.

The survey of 1,025 American adults, including 876 registered voters, was conducted online between July 26 and 28.

Search for vice-presidential candidate

Kamala and her campaign continue to vet potential vice presidential candidates behind closed doors and a decision could be made soon.

She is preparing to campaign alongside the nominee in key states next week.

However, candidates for the position have not yet built a substantial national profile, the survey found.

Senator and former astronaut Mark Kelly of Arizona had the highest favorable opinion rate among this group, at 32 percent, followed by governors:

  • Pennsylvania’s Josh Shapiro at 27 percent
  • Andy Beshear of Kentucky with 20%
  • JB Pritzker of Illinois with 14%
  • and Tim Waltz of Minnesota with 11%

About half of registered voters who responded to the survey said they had not heard of Kelly and were even less familiar with the others.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was not included in the latest poll, but 37 percent of registered voters who responded to last week’s survey had a favorable opinion of him.
