K-pop group claims to be a fan of Neymar; Meet 8Turn

The South Korean group 8Turn It may be based on Seoul, but has already shown that certain passions, such as Brazilian music and football, cross borders. In an interview with CNN, member Hae Min revealed to be a fan of Neymar:

“He has amazing skills, he’s romantic and rich. I heard he went to the ex-girlfriend’s wedding and found it very cool,” he said excitedly.

Formed by Jae Yun, Myung Ho, Min Ho, Yoon Sung, Hae Min, Kyung Min, Yun Gyu and Seng Heon, the group debuted in 2023 to trace its way on K-pop without following ready formulas.

8Turn has not been born from a large agency, but already adds more than 200,000 copies sold, performances at international festivals and a third place on the reality “Road to Kingdom: Ace of Ace”, a fierce competition between K-Pop groups.

Known for tracks such as “Tic Tac”, “Excel” and “Ru-Pum Pum”, in March they released the “Leggo” single, which features a vibrant title track and the romantic “I Want You Now”.

“Leggo” seems to express the feeling of finding a way to get around and be the protagonist of his own life. Is this the message you are trying to pass? And how does the clip help tell this story?

Jae Yun: Yes, the lyrics have this meaning, but in a way, it is more about doing or not doing, it is about “let’s give a chance”, just try and find out, instead of feeling anxious and worrying before the time. I think this mindset helps you feel the protagonist of your life.

Yun Gyu: I felt it as I repeatedly watched our clip. He starts with us finding a pamphlet that says, “Who are these stylish children?” And then the song begins when we rip pieces of this pamphlet. In the end, it conveys the message that we are the stylish children we were looking for. Because if we think about who is the most amazing person of our lives, we can conclude that we are.

Seng Heon and Yun Gyu participated in the composition of “Leggo”. How was the process of composing the song together?

Seing Heon: I’m very grateful for that. While writing the lyrics, I kept thinking I’m the most stylish and amazing guy. And that received so much love and compliments from the turnings [nome dos fãs]who praised us for doing a good job. I am more proud of.

Yun Gyu: In addition, if we look at 8Turn, we are full of energy and confidence. I thought it best to show our confidence in a more subtle way, without using such direct terms. Instead, I tried to show our vibe and express this confidence more naturally.

In the song “I Want You Now,” you sing, “You’re like a Blink-182 song on Replay and I think, ‘Hey, Girl, increases at most’.” What song from Blink-182, or another band and artist, do you like to listen to the maximum volume?

JAE YUN: This phrase we send a save to music from BLINK-182 It was a save to millennials, I think. It is a generation that really enjoys the blink-182. We thought it would give a nice touch, a gesture to put in a love song. And personally, my favorite Blink-182 song is “Adam’s Song” and I think a lot of people agree.

You have been active in Tiktok since trainee times. How do you see Tiktok as a musical disclosure tool? Do you think this helped 8TURN connect with fans around the world?

Kyung Min: As we are in the age of short content, people like to consume quick and objective things. It is an app that allows us to connect with many people, a very valuable tool for our disclosure.

Myung Ho: Instead of calling a promotion “tool”, I prefer to think of it as a means of communication with our fans. I like to see them enjoying the content we post. This is the main reason why we are so active in Tiktok.

Yoon Sung: In addition, some songs go viral on Tiktok. It can be a song from Brazil or a song in Spanish. And whenever we record content on Tiktok with these songs, people in these countries begin to enjoy our content and leave comments, asking “Who is this guy?”… This allows more people to know us. It’s a great way in this regard.

Myung Ho: And the turning recommend: “It’s the new 8turn song!”

What do you think of Jae Yun’s tiktoks with all those random effects?

Yun Gyu: It’s legendary.

Hae Min: Amazing.

Yun Gyu: It’s gold.

Myung Ho: He’s the Tiktok

Yun Gyu: The greatest of all.

Jae Yun: I think the biggest difference between Tiktok and the other networks is that you can be very spontaneous, genuine and can show your silly side instead of that perfect idol image. I think this really helps to attract the silly side of 8Turn and it helps us attract a global audience.

A unique aspect of K-pop is that groups often live together in a dorm, which may surprise those who do not know this universe. How has this experience been for you? Have you created some special tradition or routine as a group?

Seing Heon: We spent every second together, as we live together. Regarding traditions, we usually dinner together after a big event, such as shows or the end of an album promotions. To celebrate, we gather and ate something delicious.

Hae Min: And after finishing our day schedule, we split into groups of four and throw stone, paper and scissors. We do this because we need to decide who will use the bathroom first and stone, paper and scissors is our tradition to decide.

I hear that you have a tradition of preparing lunchboxes for members before important events or evidence. Can you tell more about this tradition? And what kinds of foods do you usually put on lunchboxes?

Min Ho: It all started with the Kyung Min entrance exam and Hae Min. Since then, we thought it would be a good idea to prepare lunchboxes for members. The company told us it could be interesting to turn this into content. Then we prepared lunchboxes for Hae Min and Kyung Min, then for Yun Gyu. We went for shopping and do fried rice because it’s easy to eat.

Yun Gyu: We look forward to the entrance exam of our youngest, Seung Heon.

You are eight people in a group, each with different personalities. How has your friendship evolved over time?

Jae Yun: At the moment, it seems more like a family relationship than friendship because we have been together for how long? Three, four years? 24 hours a day. We are trapped together, unfortunately. We became a family… We fight, yes, sometimes, but I think it helps us strengthen friendship. And kind of we are always there for each other. Especially with the survival program “Road to Kingdom” we did last year. And this album. We really help mutually emotionally and physical. We have a real friendship and ties that are like family.

You sent very well on the reality “Road to Kingdom”. Staying in third place is a great achievement, congratulations.

All: Thank you, thank you very much.

If you present under pressure it can be difficult. I would like to know if you have any personal method to calm down before the great times.

Yun Gyu: Pray?

Hae Min: Pray to God.

Yoon Sung: Being nervous is natural, and I think the important thing is how you control your mind right now. As we practice a lot, we just think: “Let’s do as we practice” and “trust your muscle memory.” So we follow this and enjoy the moment. I think this was the thought I always had before taking the stage.

Myung Ho: I am very nervous too before going on stage… Before we took, we gathered and shouted our slogan, shouted together and climbed. It is like a ritual to prepare the mind, as if we were for war. This transforms nervousness into excitement and helps us have positive energy on stage. I think it’s a good method.

The world knows Brazil for incredible music, food and sports talents. What do you know about Brazilian culture? Do you know any Brazilian artist or soccer player?

Hae Min: Neymar!

Yun Gyu: Neymar!

Myung Ho: Neymar.

Jae Yun: We love Brazilian culture, gastronomy and music, but we have a crazy football fan in our group and is Hae Min. He really loves Neymar.

Yun Gyu: Skill!

Hae Min: First of all, Neymar has amazing skills. He is also a very romantic person. There is a story that touched me… I heard that Neymar promised his ex that he would go to her marriage. He really appeared at the wedding and someone took a picture of him.

Yun Gyu: Romantic.

Hae Min: I found it very romantic. He is a nice guy. Cool, beautiful and rich.

HAE MIN: And we love the music of Brazil, the Brazilian funk.

Do you like Brazilian music? What do you like to hear?

Hae Min: Actually… It’s not that I seek specifically for Brazilian music.

Yun Gyu: Are you lying?

Min Ho: Listen to me, listen to me!

Jae Yun: Why are you lying?!

MIN HO: If you enter Tiktok, you can see Brazilian funk. You dance like this [faz a dança do ombrinho]. Seeing this kind of dance makes me want to dance with music, do you know what you mean, guys?

All: Yes!
