K. Mitsotakis put a definitive end to the scenario for early elections in the Autumn

By Dimitris Gatsiou

On the day that the New Democracy… completed three years in the government of the country, the prime minister chose to put an end, in the most categorical way, to the scenarios that have been circulating in recent weeks for an appeal to early elections, even in the second fortnight of September. After his relevant reports from the floor of the Plenary and in the debate on the government’s social policies, Mr. Mitsotakis returned, in order to declare that he favors political stability, in an environment of multiple geopolitical uncertainties, sending the signal that he will keep the… helm of the country, in view of a difficult winter, even if this will have political costs for him and the “blue” faction.

“I’m not looking for a poll… clearing, to hold elections. Besides, polls, the image of the government throughout the three years, with some ups and downs, has been extremely positive… We have a government that has a strong parliamentary majority and my obligation is to ensure the stability of the country and the governability, which today is guaranteed. And let me tell you one more thing: and if I have any costs from this, political costs, because we will have a difficult winter ahead of us, I did not hide it, I am absolutely willing to undertake it, because I am never going to play with the institutions. To endanger the stability of the country in order to serve the “interest” of my re-election”, Mr. Mitsotakis emphasized, in the interview he granted on “Sky” radio. .

What is of particular interest and was said at the beginning is the fact that the prime minister, for the first time after relevant reports, such as those that came to the fore during the last weeks, stood absolutely clear against any scenarios, highlighting the concepts of institutionality and of political stability. Concepts that he has often used in his public speech, as another characteristic element, which draws dividing lines between the ruling faction and the official opposition party. “I take the risk of stability. And if that has a political cost, so be it. But, I know that right now to lead the country into early elections with the … bomb of simple analogy, with an unpredictable Turkey in front of us, I don’t believe that it is a nationally responsible act and if this leads me to have a political cost, because I will have to manage a difficult winter, so be it,” he noted.

In addition to his reports, however, on the matter of electioneering, which was swelling as it approached the three-year milestone since the elections of July 7, 2019, there are also the signals that the prime minister sent to his ministers for the continuous production of work. Indirect, but clear signals regarding the major issue of promoting change and reform, especially at a time of great social need.

“We are already entering the pre-election year with the calendar… This does not mean, however, that the final stretch, a final stretch that will actually take many months, should be an alibi, in order to slow down or to start from now on dealing with the pre-election preparation. I have said many times that this is something I will not tolerate,” Mr. Mitsotakis pointed out, basically calling on the ministers not to put down… pencils. And, as is the case in these cases, the scenario for the possibility of a reshuffle of the government scheme has only just begun.
