K. Mitsotakis for Ukraine: We hope for the best but we also prepare for the worst

Noting the strong interest of Greece in the developments in Ukraine, the Prime Minister took a position on the discussions of the “27”, before the Summit of the European Union – African Union.

“We had the opportunity, before the start of the EU-Africa Summit, to discuss developments in Ukraine. We reaffirmed our absolute unity, our support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and our determination to respond in a coordinated and coordinated manner. “Our Euro-Atlantic allies in the event of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” said Mr Mitsotakis, referring to the work of the Summit.

“At the same time, however, we reaffirmed our commitment to dialogue and the need to keep open all channels of communication with Russia, whether through the Normandy format or through the OSCE, or through bilateral contacts that EU Member States may have. The Greek Foreign Minister, Nikos Dendias, will also be in Moscow tomorrow for talks with his Russian counterpart, where he will reiterate the country’s positions, which are also those of all European Union member states. “Greece’s interest is intense for the developments in the region, as -as you know- tens of thousands of people of Greek origin live in Ukraine”, he added.

Looking at the Summit, the Prime Minister said that he would also inform his counterparts about a number of very important interconnection initiatives between the African continent and Europe, especially in the field of energy.

“We will have the opportunity to discuss with African heads of state and government the framework of European Union – Africa cooperation with a horizon of 2030. Greece is a country that is adjacent to Africa, it is a country that has traditionally had close ties with Africa. At the same time, it is a country that is not burdened by a colonial past, so our ability to expand our operations in Africa is very important, and I will have the opportunity to inform my counterparts about a number of very important interconnection initiatives.
