“Obviously, we are all disturbed by the court’s decision to release a man who has been convicted in the first instance of two rapes”, said ND MP Konstantinos Kyranakis, among others, in an interview (Kontra Channel), adding that “the decision deepens the trust gap between Justice and society”.
As he argued, there should be a real life sentence for heinous crimes and not after some years the criminals walk free again. And he added that, since Mr. Lignadis was found guilty in the first instance for two rapes of minors, “the 12 years of imprisonment imposed on him based on the SYRIZA Criminal Code are few. […] If the court were to decide with the Criminal Code introduced in 2021 by the ND, the only sentence that could be imposed on Mr. Lignadis would be life imprisonment”, with the court in this case not deciding on release from prison until the hearing of the appeal .
And he concluded: “I know that I had some options before me as a member of parliament and I voted for the option of life sentences for the rapists of minor victims and I feel good with my conscience. I do not know if my colleagues from SYRIZA who voted against the new Criminal Code and voted accordingly the former, if they feel good in conscience”.
