The legislative framework for distributors’ transport boxes exists in the KOK and is strict. At the end of the year, when we bring the new Road Traffic Code, we can, in cooperation with the Greek Police, see if we should tighten it even more, said the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Konstantinos Ah. Karamanlis, answering a relevant topical question of MeRA25 MP, Kriton Arsenis.
The minister explained that “the existing framework exists and is strict, but the issue is whether it is applied correctly and this is what we should look at with great care”.
In particular, he stated that according to article 32 of the Code of Civil Procedure “the gross weight of the load may not exceed the maximum allowed. The driver’s visibility should not be restricted and the load should not protrude more than 30%. In fact, it is expressly stated that any components they should be well fastened”. At the same time, there are also articles 81 and 82 of the Code on mechanisms, parts and devices of vehicles, so that they do not create risks for passengers, but also for other users of the road network”. the minister said that it is foreseen that “if the two-wheeler’s traffic license states the existence of additional portable equipment, it should be checked as well as its correct fastening”.
Mr. Karamanlis recognized that the problem is that usually these two-wheelers when they pass through KTEO do not pass with the hood from behind. Because these two-wheeled vehicles usually, eight times out of ten, are two-wheeled vehicles that belong to the workers themselves and when they pass them through the KTEOs, most of the time they remove these boxes and so obviously the control is neither correct nor reliable and this is a an issue which must be looked at with great care in the new KOK.
MeRA25 Member of Parliament, Kriton Arsenis stated that courier companies should normally have their own fleet of motorbikes. The carrying boxes, he said, are haphazardly attached, out of specification and illegal under the Highway Traffic Code. He wondered why there is not the slightest intervention as if there were fines for these motorbikes the companies would be obliged to make a private fleet, make bags, as is done in all other countries and general things that would protect the safety of people. He observed that the user manuals of two-wheelers state: “Avoid the use of commercial accessories for loading, carrying cargo that reduce the stability of the vehicle by changing the weight distribution, as it will bear the sole responsibility for any accident.” It doesn’t exist, said the MP? in no other country boxes back to the delivery cars.
