K. Ah. Karamanlis: ND has always supported the most vulnerable and the middle class

The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Costas Karamanlis, spoke to ERT1 about dealing with the accuracy, the war in Ukraine, the big projects and the strengthening of the means of public transport. The minister referred to the “measures of relief” of the citizens from the accuracy, announced yesterday by the prime minister and specialized today by the co-responsible ministers. He reminded that the support measures from the beginning of the energy crisis until today reach a total of 4 billion euros and spoke about a social protection net, given the budgetary margins.

He stressed that the European Union must find a common strategy and a common solution. He reminded that the Prime Minister has submitted a proposal for a package of six measures in order to address the energy crisis at European level. “We hope that Europe has learned from the mistakes of the past and is united, as it was with the measures against Russia and with the Recovery Fund,” he said.

Mr. Karamanlis underlined that the New Democracy faction has always supported the most vulnerable, but also the middle class, recalling the tax cuts that the government has made in the last three years. “We have reduced 57 tax rates, which reach the small and medium strata,” he noted, among other things.

Regarding the country’s attitude towards the war in Ukraine, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport commented that: “What Konstantinos Karamanlis had said that Greece belongs to the West is something that we must one day believe. And what Kyriakos said Mitsotakis, that Greece is the West, I think that at least the majority of the Greek people agree “. “Here we are talking about an invasion, an event that has not happened in Europe for eight decades,” he said. He reminded that Greece has been a member of NATO since 1952 and of a united Europe since 1980 and stressed: “It is clear that every time our country was with the West, it won.”

Mr. Karamanlis also referred to the major projects that change the daily lives of citizens. He stressed that Patras-Pyrgos, a project that has been delayed due to criminal negligence of the previous government, has begun construction and will be ready in late 2023- early 2024.

He noted that the Thessaloniki Metro is 83% ready and the goal is to have completed its construction, tests and put into operation according to the schedules, at the end of 2023. He referred to the huge delay caused by the appeals. which we supported SYRIZA and stressed: “We will not inaugurate tarpaulins, we will not enter with helmets in wagons that are not on rails.

Mr. Karamanlis also mentioned that in the summer the last three stations of the Metro extension to Piraeus will be delivered, which means that one can go from the largest airport to the largest port in the country within 50 minutes.

Regarding Line 4 of the Athens Metro, Mr. Karamanlis recalled the memorandum of cooperation between the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and the Municipality of Athens and stressed: “Not only will the green balance be maintained, but we will add trees.”

He admitted that during construction there will be difficulties in the center, but stressed that the project must be done because it will be very beneficial for Athens and that an effort is made to make the nuisance as manageable as possible. He promised that the station in Exarchia will be built.

Mr. Karamanlis also reminded that many years ago there were reactions in a Metro station and in the square of Agia Paraskevi, estimating that today those who reacted then “hit their heads on the wall”. The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport also stated that the Metro is planned to be extended to the southern suburbs.

For Attiki Odos, he stressed that the extension of Kymi Avenue, which has already been auctioned and the design of the construction of the Ilioupolis tunnel and the upgrade of Vouliagmeni Avenue, are important at the moment, otherwise in 10 years Athens will be inaccessible.

The cost of tickets to MMM will not increase

Finally, Mr. Karamanlis stated that the issue is being overcome with the appeals in the tender for the supply of city buses, estimating that we will soon have temporary contractors. While he promised that despite the energy crisis, the cost of tickets on public transport will not increase.
