The Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice accepted the complaint of the Public Prosecution Service and transformed into army soldier Miguel Felipe dos Santos Guimarães da Silva, 20. He is accused of recording and broadcasting live the moment when a teenager set fire to a homeless man. The complaint includes crimes of attempted quadruple -qualified murder (motivated by reward, futile reason, fire and ambush), criminal association and corruption of minors.
Judge Lucia Glioche of the 4th Criminal Court not only accepted the complaint but also converted the arrest of the military to preventive. In his decision, he pointed out that the victim, who slept on the streets, was surprised by a flammable liquid and had his body burned down, running in despair to seek help. According to investigations, the transmission of the crime was made live by Miguel Felipe through a digital platform.
The attack took place in February, in the Puchincha neighborhood, in Jacarepaguá, west of the city. Ludierley Satyro José, 46, suffered burns in 60% of the body. Investigations point out that the crime was motivated by a challenge launched in a community on Discord.
During the broadcast, the teenager set fire to the victim while more than 200 people accompanied the scene in real time. For the judge, the severity of the case justifies the maintenance of the defendant’s arrest to guarantee public order:
“The crime imputed to the accused generated social shaking. Its concrete gravity mentioned above reflected negatively in the city of Rio de Janeiro, conveying a sense of fear and insecurity to the population, and the arrest of the accused is important to guarantee public order.”
The investigators pointed out that Miguel Felipe used social networks to promote criminal acts, seeking recognition within digital communities. He and the adolescent participated in online groups with neo -Nazi content and apology for hate crimes.
The defense of the military has not yet been found.
Extremist virtual groups and violence as a show
Last Sunday (20), the Rio Civil Police arrested three men suspected of planning the murder of a homeless man, with live broadcast of crime over the internet. The criminal action was avoided thanks to a joint operation of the DCAV and 19th DP (Tijuca) police stations, with the support of the Undersecretary of Intelligence and the Ministry of Justice (MJSP).
Investigations indicate that the suspects were part of a virtual organization on Discord, where they promoted crimes such as animal abuse, racism, incentive to self-mutilation and virtual rape, treating violence as a form of entertainment.
The three prisoners would be leaders of the group. One of them even publicly presented itself as an environmental activist. Police are still investigating other members and warns of the risks of internet use without supervision by young people and adolescents.
