The anesthesiologist arrested in the act for raping a patient during a cesarean section in a public hospital in Rio de Janeiro, will undergo a custody hearing on Tuesday afternoon (12). The judge may decide to convert the detention into preventive detention.
The Civil Police is awaiting further depositions. Members of the nursing team and a doctor present at the surgery must go to the police station this morning.
Giovanni Quintella Bezerra, 32, was arrested after health care workers filmed him with a cell phone as he passed his penis across the face of an unconscious patient during a cesarean section. The images also show that the organ was inserted into the woman’s mouth while the team worked on the surgery.
This Monday (11), the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro heard the mother of another patient who was also sedated by the doctor during a cesarean section. In addition to her, hospital staff gave testimony. The delegate responsible for the case, Bárbara Lomba, investigates other possible criminal conduct by the doctor and tries to identify other victims.
The disciplinary process of medical cassation instituted by the Regional Council of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro (Cremerj) should last up to 180 days. But the expectation of the president of the agency, Clovis Munhoz, is that the process will be completed before the legal deadline.
“We will do everything possible to shorten this period within the scope of the law, the rules that we are obliged to comply with and respect. We are going to do this as rigorously as possible, as soon as possible, so that this is effectively finalized well before those 180 days,” he declared.
Munhoz classified the case as horrifying and guaranteed that the anesthesiologist will have his medical record revoked. “What happened goes against everything that should guide the conduct of a medical professional”, he evaluated.
Giovanni Quintella Bezerra is being held at the Custódia de Benfica house, in the North Zone of Rio, and should be transferred to a prison after the hearing. On Monday afternoon, the lawyer hired by the anesthesiologist’s family dropped the case. So far, the CNN failed to make contact with the new defense team.
According to the State Health Department of Rio de Janeiro (SES-RJ), Giovanni is not a civil servant of the state, has the title of specialist in anesthesiology, is regularly registered with the Regional Council of Medicine (CRM) and has been working for six months as a legal entity. to the unit and to the Getúlio Vargas State Hospital, in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro.
The SES and the Health Foundation of the State of Rio de Janeiro reported that an internal investigation was opened to take administrative measures, in addition to the notification to Cremerj.
