Judge Paulo Torres Pereira da Silva, aged 69, was killed on Thursday night (19).
The murder took place in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in the metropolitan region of Recife (PE). The magistrate’s death was lamented by the Court of Justice of Pernambuco (TJ-PE), Public Ministry of Pernambuco (MP-PE) and by the president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), minister Luís Roberto Barroso.
Silva worked at the 21st Civil Court in the capital of Pernambuco. He was known as Paulão and had served in the role for 34 years, according to the Court. The magistrate had also previously acted as a substitute judge.
The TJ-PE said that it “is contacting the police authorities” in the state and that it will provide all the necessary support so that the case can be resolved quickly, with the criminals identified and held accountable.
In a statement, Barroso called the murder “cowardly”. He also said that he has already contacted the president of the TJ-PE, demanding speed in the investigations and resolution of the case to punish the culprits. “The National Council of Justice [CNJ] will monitor developments to ensure that justice is served. On behalf of the Judiciary, I offer solidarity to the family and friends,” he wrote.
The state Public Prosecutor’s Office also expressed solidarity with the family members in a statement.
