Judge denies Donald Trump’s request to overturn rape trial

Manhattan federal judge Lewis Kaplan denied Donald Trump’s defense request that the former US president’s rape and defamation trial be overturned.

In the letter sent to the judge, Trump’s lawyer claimed that the republican is not receiving fair treatment in court, and that the Court is presenting the evidence to the jury in order to reinforce the version of the woman who accuses Trump, the journalist and writer E .Jean Carroll.

The trial began last Tuesday (25th) and entered the fourth day this Monday (1st).

The ex-president’s lawyers are questioning Carroll before the court, hoping to find inconsistencies in the journalist’s speech to strengthen Trump’s version, which denies the accusations.

At the beginning of last month, the republican’s lawyers tried, without success, to postpone the start of the trial.

They claimed that the memory of another lawsuit against Trump, involving payments to pornographic film actress Stormy Daniels, was still too fresh and could influence the jury.

E. Jean Carroll claims to have been raped by Trump in the fitting room of a luxury store on Fifth Avenue in New York in the 1990s.

The former president denies it, saying that Carroll would have invented the story just to sell copies of his books.

He also said that the journalist was “not his type” and called her “mentally ill”, which gave rise to the defamation lawsuit.
