The British journalist Tony Cowell recalled special moments alongside singer Liam Payne. The former member of One Direction died on the 16th, aged 31, after falling from the balcony of the hotel where he was staying in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The reporter – brother of producer Simon Cowell, who was a judge on the program where the boy band was formed – declared that Liam “never stopped loving” his ex-partner, the British singer Cheryl, and their seven-year-old son, Bear.
“Our family has known Liam for many years. I always remember how he made a point of speaking to our now deceased mother, Julie, when she was in Simon’s dressing room,” Tony told Closer magazine.
Tony added that despite his personal struggles, Liam always went above and beyond to see his friends and family happy: “He remained kind and caring, an incredible friend to many, and a wonderful father to Bear.”
Regarding Cheryl, the journalist admitted: “I know Liam never stopped loving her, just like Bear. It will be very difficult for her. I can’t imagine the pain she is feeling.”
Earlier this week, Tony claimed that Liam was still relying on Simon’s “advice and guidance” in the months leading up to his tragic death.
“Over the years he always kept in touch with Simon. A few months ago, he visited Simon at his home in the Cotswolds and took Bear along because he knew Simon’s son Eric would be there. He felt so comfortable with Eric and Simon. He still looked to Simon for advice and guidance. Over the years, when he was dealing with problems and trying to find himself, Simon would always try to help him. They had a lot of respect for each other,” he said.
The journalist met Liam during his participation in the program “The X Factor”, in 2010, and believes that the decision to end One Direction’s activities was the beginning of the star’s personal problems.
“It was hard for him to see some of the other kids going their own way. None of us know what it was like to be in their shoes and experience the ups and downs they went through. I think the end of the band was the point at which Liam started to lose his way. He saw Harry’s career [Styles] take off, becoming a global superstar as a solo artist. That must have hurt a lot as he wondered what he was going to do. He didn’t want to take credit for other people’s success, but he was a little lost in himself. Being surrounded by the warmth of our family seemed to help him.”
