THE head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, sounded the alarm about immigration, stressing that it could work in a “dissolving” way to the detriment of The European Union.
Joseph Borel, in his Guardian interviewinvoked them deep cultural differences between European countriesbut also the in general their inability to agree on a common policy towards the specific issue.
According to the head of European diplomacy, the strengthening of nationalism in Europe is due to a greater extent to immigration and less to Euroscepticism.
He even cited Brexit as an example, which he said did not become an “epidemic” in the EU. “Nobody wants to follow the British by leaving the EU,” he said, emphasizing however that immigration is causing a “bigger rift” within the EU and in this context could prove “dissolving”.
Although we have created common external borders “we have not been able to agree on a common immigration policy so far”, he points out and adds that the deep political and cultural differences that exist within the EU are responsible for this phenomenon.
“The migration pressure has increased mainly because of the wars in Syria, Libya and the military coups in the Sahel zone,” he stressed, separating the Ukraine war from the migration pressure.
“From Gibraltar to the Caucasus there is a cycle of instability before the war in Ukraine and will continue after it. Migration from Africa is not caused by the war in Ukraine. Its root causes are lack of economic development and poor governance“, he said.
Josep Borel, in his interview, underlined the European efforts to cooperate with some African countries, which however are becoming more difficult due to the developments in the region with military regimes, coups and the action developed by various mercenary organizations, such as Wagner, within the borders of many African countries.
