US President Joe Biden has tested positive for Covid-19, the White House announced on Wednesday (17).
“Earlier today, after his first event in Las Vegas, President Biden tested positive for Covid-19. He is vaccinated and has mild symptoms,” they said, noting that he has received his booster shots.
According to the government’s statement, the president will return to Delaware, where he will remain in isolation and carry out “all his functions fully”.
Regular updates on the US President’s health will be provided by the White House.
Biden was scheduled to speak at a conference in Las Vegas on Wednesday night local time. However, Janet Murguía, president and CEO of UnidosUS, announced that the appearance had been canceled due to the diagnosis of the disease.
“I was on the phone with President Biden. And he shared his deep disappointment that he couldn’t join us this afternoon. The president has been to many events, as we all know, and he just tested positive for Covid,” Murguía told attendees.
In a statement, Joe Biden’s doctor reported that the Democrat presented symptoms such as a runny nose, cough and malaise.
“He felt fine at his first event of the day, but as he was not feeling better, the Covid-19 test was carried out and the results were positive for the Covid-19 virus,” he highlighted, adding that the confirmatory PCR test is pending.
“His symptoms remain mild, his respiratory rate is normal, his temperature is normal, and his pulse oximetry is normal at 97%. The President has received his first dose of Paxlovid. He will be self-isolating at his home in Rehoboth,” he concluded.
Biden says health issue would make him rethink candidacy
Joe Biden said during an interview that only a health problem would make him reconsider running for reelection.
“If I had any health problems, if somebody, if doctors came to me and said I have this problem, that problem… But I made a serious mistake in the whole debate,” Joe Biden told BET News’ Ed Gordon in an interview.
The Covid diagnosis comes at a crucial moment in the Democrat’s campaign, as he faces questions about his physical and mental fitness for another term.
