Joe Biden aims to establish abortion rights in the US in January

US President Joe Biden said on Tuesday that he would sign a bill to establish abortion rights in January if Democrats control the legislature next year. The announcement comes under new pressure in relation to high inflation and the approach of the midterm elections.

Biden’s Democratic supporters could lose control of the US House of Representatives and possibly the Senate as well, in the November elections.

The head of state tries to rally the party and its supporters on the issue of abortion rights, which was severely curtailed by the Supreme Court’s decision about four months ago to strike down Roe v. Wade.

If Democrats elect more senators and retain control of the House of Representatives, Biden said he would sign a bill in January codifying Roe v Wade to protect abortion rights.

“Here’s the promise I make to you and the American people: the first bill I’m going to send to Congress will be to codify Roe v. Wade,” the president said during a speech at the Howard Theater in Washington.

He also asked Americans to remember how they felt the day the court’s decision was announced: “I want you to remember that the final word does not rest with the Court now. It’s not up to extremist Republicans in Congress. The final word on your right to choose rests with you. And if you do your part and vote, the Democratic leaders in Congress, I promise, will do our part. I will do my part,” he warned.

Joe Biden and senior White House officials this month announced new guidelines and concessions to protect the right to abortion and contraception. He stressed that he will not “just sit back and let Republicans across the country adopt extreme policies.”
