Jeremy Hunt named the new UK finance minister

Former Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt has been appointed Minister of Finance of the UK said the prime minister’s office Liz Truss this Friday (14), after the resignation of Kwasi Kwarteng.

Hunt was unsuccessful on two occasions when he contested the leadership of the Conservative Party, once losing to Boris Johnson and then being knocked out in the first round of voting that named Truss the winner.

Viewed as a centre-right, the politician has endorsed Truss’ rival, former finance minister Rishi Sunak, to become prime minister, and is seen by many in the party as “a safe pair of hands”.

Before being Minister of Foreign Affairs, he has also served as Minister of Health and Minister of Culture. Now he becomes the UK’s fourth finance minister in a few months.

Truss’s office also said Edward Argar had replaced Chris Philp as chief secretary of the Treasury, the department’s second most senior post.
