At just 20 years old, Jenna Ortega became known worldwide for playing the character Wandinha in the Netflix series of the same name, which is inspired by the Addams Family.
The production broke the record of “Stranger Things” and became the most viewed English-language series in a week on the streaming service, accumulating 341.2 million hours watched. Season 2 has already been confirmed.
However, in an interview with the actor Dax Shepard’s podcast on Monday (6), called Armchair Expert, Jenna vented about the role and said that it is not her greatest pride.
In the interview, she stated that when working on the series, she tried to do something completely different. “I am naturally a very expressive person. I’ve never done a teen show like this before. It’s not normally the type of series I would watch, so it felt very out of place for me,” she said.
She said that she doesn’t usually watch her own work, but she likes to come home after the set and be able to say “the scene we shot today was good”. The feeling with the recordings, according to her, was completely different. “In ‘Wandinha’, there wasn’t a scene in that series where I said: ‘okay, fine’”, she vented.
Jenna revealed that this feeling added an extra level of insecurity and stress to her after the series opened doors she had always dreamed of. For her performance as a member of the Addams Family, Jenna earned nominations at the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Today, the production is the most famous work of the actress.
“My brain completely disregards it,” he commented on the podcast. “It’s like, ‘The general public must be so easy to please.’ It is to this thought that my brain goes. […] I don’t want to be known specifically for that.”
Ortega intervened on the set of “Wandinha”
One of the challenges for the actress while recording “Wandinha” was feeling the need to keep the character true to who she really was.
“I don’t think I’ve ever had to intervene as much on set as I did in “Wandinha”, he admitted.
“Everything she does, everything I had to play made no sense for her character. Her being in a love triangle made no sense. There was a line about this dress she has to wear to a school dance and she’s like ‘Oh my god I love this!’ I can’t believe I said that. I literally hate myself. And I had to say, ‘No, not at all.’”
Ortega said that there were times on set that he even felt unprofessional because he started changing some of the character’s lines and had to sit down with the writers to explain what was going on. “I became very, very protective of her. [Wandinha]”, he said.
But Jenna says she understands that you can’t do a story without an emotional arc, because otherwise it gets boring and no one will like it.
“And Wandinha is a teenager. When you’re little and you say morbid and hurtful things, it’s funny and ‘oh, you’re still naive’. But when you become a teenager, it’s, ‘Now you’re being nasty and you know it.’ There is less excuse,” she explained.
Flash mob in “Wandinha”
One of the changes the actress made was in the dance scene, which went viral and became iconic in pop culture.
According to Jenna, the initial idea is that it was a flash mob. Wadinha would start dancing, everyone would notice and dance with her.
The actress said she vetoed it. “Because she [Wandinha] would you be ok with that? I said ‘either cut that idea or Wandinha would knock someone out and that’s it’”.
