Browsing through stalls or wandering around inside clothes shops vintage It’s not that difficult to find an old pair of jeans in your hands Levi’s. But be careful, because that denim it could have unimaginable value.
We all know that jeans are a flexible, comfortable garment, but first and foremost resistant. So there is nothing to be surprised if you can come across denim trousers around that have dozens and dozens of years behind them. And these are precisely the jeans that could prove to be a treasure. In particular, those produced between 1949 and 1954, due to their rarity, can reach estimates from 7 thousand dollars to well over: just a 501 vintage, dating back to the 1950s, it reached the stratospheric sum of almost 34 thousand dollars on eBay (due to its perfect condition and the presence of the original paper guarantee).
But How to understand if we have a pair of jeans that could be worth a fortune? While Levi’s do not print the year of manufacture on your products, the Tabs – the brand’s iconic red tab which became famous in the 1940s when the brand wanted to trademark its distinctive blue jeans – may provide some indication of the period in which they were made.

In particular, until the early 1970s Levi’s applied the logo renamed «Big E» where, to emphasize the name, all the white letters on the red background were in capital letters. An element that distinguishes it from the jeans produced after 1971 where a small (but not so irrelevant) detail changes: the “e” in Levi’s inside the Tab becomes tiny.

There are in fact other characteristics that tell us the period of birth of a garment: even on the official website there is a guide to identify the period of origin with reliable precision. For example, look for care labels (introduced in garments Levi’s in the 70s) or even examine the internal seams to check if there is only one that runs along the inside of the thigh, or two like today: this means that the garment was made before the mid-80s.
In short The hunt is on for jeans that can earn you a hefty nest egg. But perhaps we don’t even need to do such a long search: what if they were already inside our closet, or perhaps even more likely, in our father’s?
