Javier Milei takes office as president of Argentina

Javier Milei was sworn in this Sunday (10) at the National Congress as president of Argentina, minutes before his vice-president, Victoria Villarruel, and his ministers.

The president-elect received the presidential sash and baton from the hands of the former president, Alberto Fernández.

The ceremony was presided over by his predecessor Alberto Fernández and vice-president Cristina Fernández, before the national congress in Buenos Aires.

After being sworn in as president of Argentina, Javier Milei left Congress and headed to the steps, from where he spoke to a crowd that had gathered to participate in the inauguration ceremony.

Protocol breach

As soon as he assumed the presidency of Argentina this Sunday (10). Milei broke inauguration protocol and spoke from the steps of Congress, instead of inside the building.

Addressing his supporters in front of Congress, Milei said that this is the day on which decades of failure and disputes that ruined the country were buried.

“Today a new era begins in Argentina. An era of peace and prosperity. An era of growth and development. An era of freedom and progress”, said Milei during his inauguration speech.

First measures

A few hours after winning with more than 11 percentage points of advantage over the government candidate Sergio Massa, the elected president of Argentina, Javier Milei, began to give his first definitions about what his government’s measures will be from December 10th.

Milei had already anticipated this in her speech on the night of November 19th. “There is no room for gradualism, for laxity, or for half measures. If we do not move forward quickly, we will be heading towards the worst crisis in our entire history”, he warned after the results that gave him victory.

In statements to local media last Monday (4), the libertarian began to give his first definitions about the possible privatization of companies and public media, a system of “vouchers” in health and education, exchange rate actions , fees and also raised the first names of his team.

Cabinet and Supreme Court of Justice

In his first statements to the media, Milei also gave some definitions and indications about who will accompany him in his management.

Among the names already announced to assume ministries are:

  • Ministry of Human Capital: Sandra Pettovello
  • Ministry of Economy: Luis Caputo
  • Ministry of Infrastructure: Guillermo Ferraro
  • Interior Ministery: Guillermo Francos
  • Justice ministry: Mariano Cúneo Libarona
  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Diana Mondino
  • Ministry of Security: Patricia Bullrich
  • Ministry of Health: Mario Russo
  • Ministry of Labour: Gustavo Morón
  • Chief of Staff: Nicolas Posse
