Japan: The killer of 7 people in Tokyo in 2008 was executed

A Japanese man who was sentenced to death in 2015 for killing seven people in 2008 on the streets of Akihabara, a district of Tokyo known for its many electronics stores, has been executed, local media reported today, including public broadcaster NHK.

Tomohiro Kato had driven his car into passersby in broad daylight before getting out of the vehicle and starting stabbing people at random, killing seven people and injuring ten others.

Japan’s Justice Ministry did not immediately confirm or deny his execution when contacted by AFP for more information.

It is the first execution in Japan since December, when three convicted murderers were hanged on the same day.

Japan is, along with the US, one of the last industrialized and democratic countries in the world where the death penalty is still imposed and practiced. According to opinion polls, the application of the death penalty is still supported by a large part of public opinion in the archipelago.
