Japan holds ceremony to mark 79th anniversary of Hiroshima atomic bombing

Japan on Tuesday (6) marked the 79th anniversary of the US atomic bombing of Hiroshima, where Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida called for a world free of nuclear weapons despite “Russia’s nuclear threats” making it “even more challenging”.

Some 50,000 participants, including ambassadors from 109 countries, attended an open-air memorial ceremony held at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.

Kishida, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui and other participants attended a wreath-laying ceremony.

A peace bell rang at 8:15 a.m., marking the time the bomb was dropped. The bomb, nicknamed “Little Boy,” fell on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, and killed thousands of people instantly and an estimated 140,000 by the end of the year. Japan surrendered on August 15, 1945.
