Director James Cameron said, in an interview with Peoplealready have ideas for a sixth and seventh film in the “Avatar” franchise — even if the third only hits theaters in 2025.
“We've already fully written movie five and I have ideas for the sixth and seventh, although I'll probably be passing the baton at that point,” said Cameron, who is 69 today. “I mean, mortality catches up with you. But we are enjoying what we are doing. We are loving it. We work with great people.”
The director shared his desire for “Avatar” to become a franchise like “Star Wars” or “Star Trek.”
“These franchises that build worlds and have been around since I was a kid, those were my inspirations. And as I was saying, we are still a young universe. We only have two films, we're halfway through the third one now. To have that kind of cultural impact over time, you need to put all your heart and energy into it,” said the director.
Cameron went on to say that if the films continue to be successful, it would prove that “people are naturally empathetic.”
“They innately desire connection with each other. They innately desire beauty. And a lot of science fiction films are dystopian,” she said. “Our message is actually dystopian to some extent, but it's about beauty, it's about connection, it's about positive values, and it seems to be working.”
The third film was originally scheduled to arrive in 2024, but Disney delayed the franchise and scheduled the film's premiere for December 19, 2025.
“Avatar 4” is scheduled for December 21, 2029, followed by “Avatar 5” on December 19, 2031.
