Jaguar involved in Homemade attack on MS should be transferred; understand

The jaguar responsible for attacking a caretaker in the interior of Mato Grosso do Sul, should not return to the forest region where it was captured. The feline passes treatment at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (CRAS), in Campo Grande (MS).

After treatment, the jaguar should be transferred to a definitive or provisional enclosure, according to the government. In a note to CNN the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) said future referrals will be discussed by the State Secretariat of Environment, Development, Science, Technology and Innovation (Semadesc) in conjunction with the Institute.

“The animal must be destined to a fauna maintaining institution that will receive it and will be incorporated into the jaguar population management program, coordinated by ICMBio,” says the note. The fate of the animal must be decided in the plan of the program that seeks to conserve the species in all Brazilian biomes.

The animal was captured on Thursday (24), in the region of Mata Taurus Dead, in Mato Grosso do Sul, three days after attacking home José Avalo, 60.

According to the latest veterinary bulletin, released by the state government, the animal underwent examinations and is in 24 -hour veterinary follow -up, due to dehydration, weight loss, and liver, kidney and gastrointestinal changes.

Case

The 60-year-old homemade Jorge Aval was attacked and killed by a jaguar in the Mata de Taurus Dead (MS) region, about 230 km from Campo Grande. He was killed on Monday (21) and his body was located on Tuesday (22).

Jorge was attacked while trying to collect honey on a deck near the woods last Monday (21). Residents of the region report that the attack was suddenly and that a man who located the victim found blood marks and traces of the animal’s presence.

The victim’s remains were found following the trails left by the animal in the woods. The body was dragged by the jaguar for more than 50 meters when the agents arrived at the scene.

The feline would only have retreated after being frightened by gun shots. The case remains under investigation and, according to the authorities, are considered hypotheses such as food shortages, defensive behavior, reproductive period of the animal or some involuntary attitude of the victim for the motivation of the attack.
