In September 2021, it was reported that WhatsApp was preparing a feature for transcribing voice messages in its application. However, development was suspended for unknown reasons – this often happens when certain features of the service are being tested. Fortunately, the messenger team has resumed work on this feature, and the evidence has appeared in the latest test build of WhatsApp.
Profile resource WABetaInfo found a pop-up window in WhatsApp 23.3.0.73 beta for iOS explaining why transcription of voice messages may not be available. There are two reasons: the service cannot recognize words or the installed language does not match the language of the voice message. Below is the decryption language and the option to change it. Apparently, the decryption process takes place on the device by downloading the appropriate language packs, and the data is not transmitted to the WhatsApp or Apple servers. At the moment, the innovation is being tested in the beta version of the messenger for iOS, this feature was not found in the assembly for Android. At best, this feature will be released in the coming weeks.
It is worth noting that the transcript of voice messages is already available in Telegram, but it is available only to Premium users. In WhatsApp, this feature will work for free. In addition to transcribing voice messages, the latest iOS messenger beta also includes a fix for those users who are having trouble sending documents.
