Italy: The Draghi government with the “finger” of the Five Stars is collapsing

The Five Star Movement announced that today Thursday (14/7) in the senate, he is not going to give vote of confidence in his government Mario Draghi. “The answers we were given, to the issues we raised, are not enough,” said the president of the “five stars” and former prime minister, Giuseppe Conte. Officials of the League commented that “the governing majority that supports Draghi has ceased to exist”.

It is expected to be established, now, what the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella will decide. That is, if he will ask Mario Draghi to verify whether he continues to have the confidence of the Italian parliament and the senate.

It is recalled, however, that in recent days the Italian technocrat prime minister has stated that he is not prepared to continue governing with a majority different from the one that supported him until now.

“The government cannot work with ultimatums because it loses its raison d’être,” Draghi told reporters on Tuesday, in direct reference to the position of the Five Star Movement.

“If we can work we will move forward, otherwise we won’t move forward”, he emphasized Italian technocrat prime minister.

The Draghi statement had come following the decision of the Five Star Movement not to attend Monday’s vote in the Italian Parliament on the approval of new economic measures to support low-income citizens.

The same measures will have to be approved tomorrow, Thursday, by the Senate and the “five stars” finally decided not to vote.

Essentially what should be immediately ascertained is whether the Five Star Movement wishes to remain within the broad governing coalition led by Mario Draghi, or decide to choose the opposition.

If the second option prevails, Italian President Sergio Mattarella is likely to ask Draghi to verify whether he still has the support of the House and Senate.

Mario Draghi and Sergio Mattarella had an hour-long meeting on Monday.

According to Italian government imgs, domestic and international policy issues were discussed at the meeting.

At the same time, however, the Italian media reported that the governmental instability of the last few hours was also discussed, due to the decision of the Five Star Movement not to take part in the vote in Parliament.

As Rai public television points out, the main challenge, going forward, for Mario Draghi is to manage to continue to rule, despite the increasingly critical attitude of Five Star and the League, even if, officially, they continue to support him.

Italian President Mattarella has made it clear that at such a critical stage, due to the war in Ukraine, its economic impact and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, every effort must be made to preserve governmental stability.
