Italy’s Civil Protection raised the alert level for the Stromboli volcano to red on Thursday (4). Authorities said they had started a pre-alert operational phase following a significant increase in volcanic activity.
Video released by Italian firefighters showed a pyroclastic flow – a mixture of hot gas with volcanic matter, ash and rock fragments – rapidly descending from the volcano, reaching the coast and extending hundreds of meters into the sea.
At the same time, volcanic activity also intensified on Mount Etna in Sicily, leading local authorities to temporarily close Catania airport.

Etna and Stromboli are the most explosive volcanoes due to the composition of their magma, and can erupt more intensely due to small variations in the chemical composition of their magma.
